Job Overview
The Fiber Optic Deployment Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, installing, and optimizing fiber optic infrastructure for Huawei’s expanding network in Lesotho. Reporting to the Network Operations Manager, the engineer will oversee end‑to‑end project execution, from site surveys and civil works coordination to splicing, testing, and documentation. The role involves close collaboration with cross‑functional teams, local contractors, and government agencies to meet project timelines and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed site surveys and feasibility studies for new fiber routes, assessing terrain, right‑of‑way, and environmental considerations.
- Develop and review engineering designs, schematics, and deployment plans in alignment with Huawei’s technical standards.
- Coordinate civil works, trenching, and conduit installation with local contractors, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Perform fiber splicing, termination, and testing using OTDR, power meter, and other diagnostic tools to guarantee optimal signal performance.
- Document all installation activities, generate as‑built drawings, and maintain accurate project records in Huawei’s project management system.
- Collaborate with the Network Operations Center to troubleshoot and resolve fiber link issues post‑deployment.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior field technicians and local partners.
- Ensure all work adheres to local regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Huawei’s quality assurance protocols.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in fiber optic installation, splicing (fusion and mechanical), and testing methodologies.
- Strong understanding of network design principles, including GPON, DWDM, and Ethernet over Fiber.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and capacity to work under tight project deadlines.
- Effective communication skills for liaising with contractors, government officials, and internal stakeholders.
- Familiarity with health and safety standards related to construction and telecommunications work.
- Ability to read and interpret civil engineering drawings and GIS data.
- Competence in using project management software and reporting tools.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates with recognized certifications such as Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or similar will be given preference.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of three to five years of hands‑on experience in fiber optic network deployment, including experience managing large‑scale projects in challenging environments. Prior exposure to working in African markets or emerging economies is advantageous.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 250,000 to SSP 350,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Performance‑based bonuses and allowances for field travel may be included.
