Job Overview

The Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of Barclays Africa Group’s ESG strategy for Lesotho. Reporting directly to the Regional Head of Corporate Affairs, the CSO will collaborate with senior leadership, business units, and external stakeholders to integrate sustainability considerations into core banking activities, product design, and risk management. The role involves overseeing ESG reporting, driving climate‑related initiatives, and ensuring compliance with local regulations and international standards such as the Task Force on Climate‑Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The CSO will also act as the primary spokesperson for sustainability matters, representing the bank at industry forums, government panels, and community events. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive ESG strategy aligned with Barclays’ global sustainability framework and Lesotho’s regulatory environment.
  • Lead the preparation and publication of annual sustainability reports, ensuring transparency and adherence to GRI, SASB, and TCFD guidelines.
  • Integrate ESG criteria into credit risk assessments, product development, and investment decisions to promote sustainable finance.
  • Engage with government agencies, NGOs, and industry bodies to influence policy and promote collaborative sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee carbon accounting, set science‑based targets, and implement climate mitigation projects such as renewable energy financing and green loan programs.
  • Drive internal awareness and capacity building through workshops, training sessions, and sustainability communication campaigns.
  • Monitor ESG performance metrics, conduct impact assessments, and provide regular updates to the Board and senior management.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, including investors, customers, and community groups, to address ESG concerns and opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with local environmental legislation, anti‑corruption laws, and international human rights standards.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the organization.

Required Skills

  • Deep expertise in ESG strategy formulation, reporting, and implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of financial services regulations, sustainable finance products, and climate risk assessment.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior executives and external partners.
  • Proven leadership in driving cross‑functional projects and building high‑performing teams.
  • Analytical proficiency with data‑driven decision‑making, including experience with ESG data platforms.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in Sesotho is an advantage.
  • Ability to navigate complex regulatory environments and adapt strategies to local contexts.

Education

A Master’s degree in Environmental Management, Business Administration, Sustainable Finance, or a related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as CFA Institute ESG Investing Certificate, GRI Certified Training, or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in sustainability leadership roles, preferably within the banking or financial services sector. Demonstrated success in ESG reporting, climate finance, and stakeholder engagement is essential.

Salary

The annual compensation package ranges from SSP 600,000 to SSP 900,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses and a comprehensive benefits suite.
