Job Overview

The Environmental Compliance Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Shell’s operations in Lesotho meet all local, regional, and international environmental regulations. Reporting to the Sustainability & Compliance Manager, the incumbent will develop, implement, and monitor environmental management systems, conduct audits, and provide technical guidance to operational teams. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain comprehensive environmental compliance programs aligned with Lesotho’s environmental legislation and Shell’s global standards.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify potential environmental impacts and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare and submit accurate environmental reports, permits, and documentation to regulatory authorities in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including Operations, Health & Safety, and Legal, to integrate environmental considerations into project planning and execution.
• Monitor emissions, waste streams, and water usage, and implement mitigation strategies to achieve reduction targets.
• Lead incident investigations related to environmental spills or non‑compliance events and develop preventive measures.
• Provide training and technical support to staff on best practices for environmental protection and sustainability.
• Stay abreast of emerging environmental regulations, industry trends, and innovative technologies to continuously improve compliance frameworks.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of Lesotho environmental laws, ISO 14001, and international environmental standards.
• Proficiency in environmental monitoring tools, data analysis software, and reporting platforms.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively.
• Analytical mindset with a problem‑solving approach to complex environmental challenges.
• Project management experience, including the ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines.
• High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to ethical practices.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) or equivalent are advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in environmental compliance, monitoring, or sustainability roles within the energy, manufacturing, or related sectors. Experience working in Lesotho or Southern Africa, and familiarity with local regulatory bodies, will be considered a strong asset.

Salary
